IIP/CSS is the first DOS organization to achieve an ATO for a cloud computing application

Falls Church, Virginia, November 15, 2013: Sevatec, Inc., a leading provider of management and technology consulting services for the federal government, today announced that its support on the IIP Cloud Program led to the first Department of State (DOS) organization to achieve an Authority to Operate (ATO) for a cloud computing application under the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA).

To obtain ATO status, the IIP Cloud Program had to meet a stringent set of criteria laid out by FISMA. FISMA creates a process for federal agencies to certify and accredit the security of their information management systems. The IIP Cloud Program was granted the ATO on August 5, 2013, after a rigorous assessment of the solution’s security controls.

The DOS IIP Cloud Program is a cloud-based IT platform used for developing and hosting internal web applications, which is built on the largest implementation of Salesforce.com in the federal government. The Content Support Services (CSS) group in the DOS International Information Programs Bureau (IIP) supports multiple independent applications in service of the Content Management System (CMS) project. Managing and supporting these independent systems requires highly responsive teams, 24/7 training efforts and rigorous coordination amongst staff.

“Current budgetary constraints make cost-effective, third party cloud solutions very appealing, but these cost benefits are only worth the investment if they can comply with strict IT security policies,” said Tim Grandison, Director of Technical Solutions at Sevatec. “This ATO represents a critical milestone in Sevatec’s efforts on the IIP CMS project to reduce costs, accelerate efficiency, and optimize results that will strengthen IIP’s ability to support U.S. foreign policy goals and national security interests.”

The IIP Cloud Program will enable DOS to better serve the department and Public Diplomacy (PD) community by providing a secure connection to a single, unified hub that supports information access, content management, customer relationship management, and open collaboration and communication among DOS staff and the PD community.
